Community Healthcare Solutions were contracted to deliver a minimum contract, consisting of 300 cataract patients to help with the waiting list issues. We provided a full turnkey solution utilising own staff, equipment, and consumables, but utilised their spare theatre capacity within their Health Board premises. Following a period of planning with the medical director, lead clinicians and hospital managers, we formulated an inclusion and exclusion plan and risk stratified the waiting list appropriately.
We provided all staff, consumables, and infrastructure (other than premises) to safely deliver high volume cataract surgery. CHEC carried the ultimate responsibility for patient safety but were assisted by the Cym Taf staff including management and ward nursing support, as and when required.
In 14 days, CHEC undertook 313 cataract surgeries, following 346 preassessments. Our safety profile showed a PCR rate of less than 1% with only GA patients excluded from the waiting list.

After a period of consultation and risk stratifying the outpatient waiting lists, managers and clinicians from both organisations devised a NICE compliant and clinically safe outsourcing service for glaucoma management. After the initial 600 patients, the contract was converted to a long-term outsourcing model to help manage long-term internal capacity within outpatients. We continue to receive referrals every month from the hospital and we have been able to release over 4000 outpatient appointments every year.
